trout in the classroom

The Trout in the Classroom program is a powerful educational experience that provides a direct connection between children and their living environment. It can create values and memories that guide the child’s behavior into adulthood and makes them thoughtful and caring stewards of the world they are about to inherit.

The program is simple but the impacts on students and families can be significant. Here’s what it looks like and what the children actually do:
  • raise trout from eggs to fry
  • monitor aquarium water quality
  • engage is stream habitat study
  • learn to appreciate water resources
  • begin to develop a conservation ethic
  • grow to understand ecosystems
  • get a first-hand experience with science
  • release their trout in a stream near their school

During the year teachers tailor programs to fit their curriculum. Each program is unique and includes interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, math, language arts, fine arts and physical education.

In Lake County, Trout in the Classroom programs are currently operating under the direction of Associate Director Tony Blyleven in Middletown, Lakeport and Konocti Unified School Districts.

For a detailed look at the 2018 program, check out this story from the April 15 edition of Lake County News.
